Pierce 2 and +2 [heart] only looks the same.
You rolled 2 [heart] and defender rolled 2 [shield]. Does not matter will it be pierce or damage, any way you will negate 2 shields and inflict 2 damage.
You rolled 2 [heart] and defender rolled 0 [shield]. Pierce is useless but +2 [heart] will give you additional damage.
