A friend of mine recently bought the Master Set. I have yet to play it with him but I am wondering if I am able to by a Faction deck so I have a set of cards to me to play with rather than always using the ones he has. Is this possible? Advisable? Oh and what it the most recommended Faction for starting out like this?
Buy your own starter set. Guild Dwarves vs Cave Goblins or Tundra Orcs vs Phoenix Elves each come with 2 factions, a paper board (more transportable!), dice, and wound markers, so you can play with or without your friend. All 4 of those factions are great beginner decks, easier to grasp than most Master Set factions (with the possible exception of the Cave Goblins, whom I adore). They retail for half the price of the Master Set and are infinitely more transportable due to size and weight issues.
The 6 factions available as standalone purchases are: Vanguards, Fallen Kingdom, Cloaks, Jungle Elves, Mercenaries, and Filth. These decks are among the most challenging to learn to play well, although several of them are quite fun once you start exploring deeper strategies.
