As far as I’m aware, @SquiggleBeast is correct. However, I have to say that the wording of Bamf! seems to be a bit sloppy, at least as far as I understand the rules.

One of the legacy rules was that “declaring a defender” was basically synonymous with using a basic DEF: you declare yourself defender by using DEF, and you cannot declare yourself defender without using DEF. In that context, the text of Bamf! makes perfect sense.

However, that was overruled a while ago, where it was decided that playing “(defense)” interrupts also counts as declaring yourself the defender, in which case you wouldn’t normally need to exhaust (i.e. “declaring yourself defender” and “performing a basic DEF” are separate concepts). In light of that, in the strictest interpretation of the text on Bamf!, it’s a “(defense)” ability, so triggering it declares you as the defender automatically anyway without exhausting, and it doesn’t say you perform a DEF, so you would not perform a DEF. Effectively the text on the card would do nothing at all.

In order for the card to do what it apparently is intended to do, it seems like the text should say something like, “Hero Interrupt (defense): When attached enemy attacks, discard this card -> perform a basic DEF without exhausting Nightcrawler.”

But maybe that’s just me misreading or misunderstanding something. Wouldn’t be the first time!
