I am surprised that the audience for Mage Knight is so large: it has 2,500+ ratings in a few months, while Runebound has "only" twice as many after over six years. I must be underestimating the level of complexity that gamers enjoy. It is telling that Mage Knight has a Game Walkthrough book in addition to about 15 pages of dense text, compared to about 9 pages of dense text for Runebound.
As an aside, why does a Runebound game take just about as long as a Mage Knight game, if is technically simpler? (something like three hours either way)

MK is a *very* unique game. AFAIK, It's the only Euro "adventure boardgame" out there. Of the conventional adventure boardgames, interest is split among Runebound, Talisman, World of Warcraft: The Boardgame, and World of Warcraft: The Adventure Game. Likewise, if you're interested in generic fantasy, that opens oneself to dungeoncrawling: The D&D Adventure boardgames, Descent 1E and 2E, etc. etc.
I think RB is simpler but takes longer because you're doing more events. You can spend the same amount of time reading comic books as you would reading Ulysses, but you're gonna read a whole lot more 'books.
I suggest you actually try and play both games a bit. They're very different!
