With four, we died fast after spawning the second group of shadows. And I'm not sure how it could go much differently.Each player turn, you get one blue die in attack. Plus one point or any supporting action, which isn't enough to kill one Then, you get 4-6 red dice in response to your 2-3 blue dice in defense, targeting the most hurt character (or the richest, who will soon be the most hurt character.
If they outnumbered you because you stopped to attack, then you get 2-3 extra damage from being mobbed. ( The second group of shadows requires that you step around the corner to reveal them. )
In our case, only the mage had a useful attack, so she took the shot, blew it and died when all three mobbed her. Then the group picked their way through our group on the next couple of turns.
