I spent three boring hours getting down to the Galactic Centre Hex and when I finally arrived the Orion Hegemony player was waiting for me. I sent in two dreadnaughts and a cruiser to take on his three cruisers. Unfortunately he had accumulated enough plasma missiles to be able to roll 36 dice before I could even fire off a shot at his fleet when I moved in. As you have probably already figured out I did not even get to roll in the combat. His missiles tore my entire fleet to shreds.
I did actually read this whole thing, and I just couldn't ignore the above.
A cruiser can have at max 4 slots for missiles (Ships MUST have a power source and a hyper drive), thus 8 missiles per cruiser, meaning at most 24 missiles fired from 3 cruisers. Sounds like you've only played once and played it wrong. He'd have to roll sixes, and granted odds are 4 dice hit, doing 2 damage each, so 8 damage total. That could wipe a fleet your size out, but on average not for one who prepared for missiles by upping their hull. Obviously rolls could vary here, but if you had played more then one game and knew how to counter missiles not only would he have failed to kill odds out, but it would only take you 3 hits with ion cannons to kill him in return. In your game this may have varied, but either way you weren't playing according to the rules.
You are right. He may have rolled 24 dice (I can't remember but I know it is divisible by 12). He was pretty satisfied with his die rolls and the guys at the table thought I would be able to shoot at least once. unfortunately that did not happen. Kudos to him though. He played an excellent game.
