"Factions don't mix."

Yes and no. Factions and Agendas were basically the same until Wave 4 came out, but different factions could certainly mix. First, you could use any unit you wanted: if it wasn't in your monster's Agenda, then it cost a bit extra to spawn it, but you could use it. Second, you could mix monsters of two adjacent agendas in a two-monster game. So Terra Khan and Zor Maxim couldn't work together (like they can in the new game), but either could team up with Defender X. (And with the new edition you won't be able to team Zor Maxim up with the Ares Mothership, which was legal in first edition.)

I don't know that the new way is particularly better or worse, just different.
