Anyway. I think that what is wrong with Tom's Review and what is wrong with this game are the exact same thing. Expectations. I feel like people came into this game expecting it to be a Gloomhaven-killer (or at least the next best Adventure game) and it's not it.
It's a question of scale in my mind. The scale of Gloomhaven is very personal, in you face, up close, and makes you care about the characters. (I still didn't like it...)
City of Kings is about being the princes in a fantasy kingdom, going out to slay the bad guys to protect your realm. You're not the king, but you're also not the hero recruited from the local tavern. This is an empire building game not a RPG board game.
