From what i read in the FAQ under
Area of Effect Attacks (emphasis mine)
"An area effect ability shows you the hexes that you can target with an attack"
does the word 'can' mean that attack hexes are optional?

regarding red target hexes you can decide which of them you want to attack. Regarding attacks that just rule "target all adjacent enemies" you can't. Either attack all or none.
I wonder about this. This would mean that Cragheart, with its Dirt TOrnado and the large AoE, can choose not to hit allies within that range. It even says that allies within the target hexes are muddled. I don't think you can choose targets within AoE hexes. It's all or nothing. What you can do is position yourself and your target area as to not hit the ally.
