I do have to argue on that.. If I'd imagine an ettin in charge of some goblin operation, I'd bet he'd be exactly the one to charge forward and show how big and ugly bossman he really is! ORKS!

And it doesn't say that OLs objective is to keep Mauler alive. OLs objective is to get goblins delivered!

Indeed, but if Mauler dies, the Overlord cannot complete his objective, so it's a conditio sine quae non to keep Mauler alive, in order to win. As much as it's a condition for the heros to prevent the goblins from scaping, if they want to win... So in fact, it is part of your objective to keep Mauler alive, although it is not explicity stated on your plan. In other words, if you want to win a chess game, your goal is to checkmate the oponent's king. Your goal doesn't say anything about avoid being checkmated by your oponent, because it is obvious: the opponent's goals invalid yours as soon as they are fulfilled before. So, if you want to put it that way, you have to fulfill your winning condition and avoid the opponent to fufill his/hers before you. So your goal is to keep Mauler alive as much as making the goblins escape (if you want to play as you are instructed in the story).

Thematically, probably Mauler was important for the Overlord (I haven't really played very much farther, so it's just a guess) and he had plans for him in the future, so we can imagine he was issued orders about restraining form engaging in direct combat. Or whatever that justifies not charging to be butchered, even if an ettin is as silly as we want to picture it. Anyway, we may imagine anything we wish about ettin psychology or "the story behind". Not caring about your plan, about making the goblins escape and directing the target you have to protect (as instructed by the intro story) to be immediatelly killed doesn't sound like a thematic way to play to me.
