When I preordered M&M in June and Summoner Wars reinforcements a month or two later, I didn't focus on the comparison between what the deal on my end would be when ordering from them vs. ordering from an OLGS. Rather, I was thinking how nice it was that by ordering from them directly, I could express my holistic appreciation and fanhood of Plaid Hat, which would in turn support them making more games in the future.
It's perfectly reasonable to make your purchasing decisions on the basis of who cuts you the best deal on an individual order, that specific time. And a smaller company will not be able to compete with the Coolstuffs of the world in that category. But as a customer, I get a different kind of longer-term, money-as-speech value from direct orders, whether pre- or otherwise, because I want Plaid Hat to succeed and make more games. That's value I really like.
