Unless our understanding of the changes as they've been described to us is totally off base, they're certainly more than nothing but I think their scope has been oversold. There are no fundamental changes to the game, rather a lot of tweaks -- the MvM video has a rundown.
Factions have been rebalanced in starting resources, home sectors, and costs, but Hydrans still research and Planta still spam the map. Not making you spend discs to take discoveries shortens the game a round. Tech tiles have been reordered but the techs themselves and cost progression are the same. Computers no longer provide initiative.
Depending on how willing you are to deface or kludge your 1st edition copy, most of these tweaks will be playable. I'm sure people are already playing 8 rounds with the no-influence-for-discoveries rule. New chits can be fun, but a random 3 Money/3 Whatever discovery tile isn't going to make or break the product.
