A bit of a tangent here, but if I were playing with children I might move the chapter end marker out one or two pages from the beginning. Or, I might just ignore it altogether if the kids were getting frustrated and were clearly more interested in advancing the story than in the challenge of beating the game by the rules.
Absolutely!
It is very easy to make the game easier, move the end backs step or two.
You can also make it harder, by starting on page two or moving "the End" one step closer.
The important thing is to do whatever makes the game fun for you.
