The first room of the first scenario is pretty much designed to teach you a harsh lesson the first time you play. So don't feel discouraged, you are far from alone in your plight. Many people have faced that the first time they play the first scenario.

I think the best possible tips (generally, rather than just for this specific scenario) are:

A specific application of the "dont't take damage" general rule for the first room of the first scenario...

Start with all your characters to one side of the starting locations, and then attack the enemies farthest to that side. By killing one or two enemies farthest to left side (for example) you're left with all the enemies to your right, and usually when there are more than 3 enemies on the board all moving in the same direction they'll get jammed up during their movement and hopefully one or two of them will get blocked out of getting to your characters.

One of the MOST IMPORTANT parts of the game is to understand how monster movement works so you can force enemies to block other enemies from getting into range to do damage to the characters. It's why the Cragheart is fun. By creating obstacles it forces more of those situations.
