I have to admit that I don't think repeated abandonment of hexes via bankruptcy is a good strategy, since it prevents you building up a cash reserve. It's a fair point that they're mildly disadvantaged by not being able to do it turn 1, but it's not as if it's some kind of crippling financial drain that they can't do anything about.

Besides, if you explore two such systems, it's only one action to abandon both of them. The last time I played Eridani, I definitely turned a profit by exploring Ring III and grabbing discovery tiles (a literal profit - I picked up 8 cash and 5 science for the price of 3 actions, and was able to use the science to buy Advanced Robotics without having to trade).
