Heroes and monster gain damage (hearts), if their damage ever equals or exceeds their health they are defeated.
Likewise heroes gain fatigue (sweat drops), which they can only gain up to an amount equal to their stamina.
If you prefer I guess you could give them their max fatigue and stamina and have them discard as they take damage and spend fatigue instead of gaining it. Though You would probably start running out of tokens in big games. Likewise it would be a pain to start every monster with several damage tokens next to them.
