Bearing in mind that we haven't bought any new Munchkin product in a while....
For choosing base sets, I'd take a moment to consider what you're a fan of. Like Lovecraft? Get the Cthulhu version. Like superheroes? Super Munchkin. D&D jokes and high fantasy? The original version.
It's not impossible to mix and match different sets, but you may indeed find that they don't synergize well with each other. For instance, we have the base set and Munchkin Bites, and they don't play very well together. I believe add-ons like Munchkin Blender can help with that, but it may be better to just keep games to single sets or maybe a mix of two at most.
We have the first two expansions for the base game. I find that it keeps things just fresh enough that it's still enjoyable even now. There's just so many cards that it leads to some good variety. You may think differently after many plays, though.
Since we only have two base games, I can't really sound off on which is "best" to get.

Thank you Amanda, that was helpful and resonates with my idea!
I don't have strong preferences about the theme, and I wonder if anyone felt "off" playing other themes since this was clearly conceived as a dungeon crawler (with the all kicking down the door and getting treasure vibe).:surprise:
