Magic Realm is my favorite board game of all time, but it does lie to you somewhat. Magic Realm tricks you into thinking it is a game about tactical combat -- because there are a lot of fiddly rules for combat. Ultimately though, the battles are pretty cut and dry once you get used to the system. I even enjoy the combat, and combats can be exciting, but most all of them are a solved problem (even the more convoluted ones with multiple combatants). That isn't the game. The game is the day to day and week to week planning to get the most out of the limited days and phases you are given before the end of the month. The battles are part of what you have to navigate to earn your points, along with the map, and the other hazards of the realm. It is a great game, and I find joy in trying to eek out VP while dodging the T Octopus, but if you are looking for a game that hands you scintillating combat after scintillating combat... MR is not it.
