Thread: Spirit Island:: General:: No, really, play without the expansion

We've all been lied to, my friends. Player counts. Durations. Promises of "novelty" or "innovation". We quite reasonably have learned to assume that publishers are exaggerating.

This includes "play the learning scenario first". Every other time I've been told this, it's been a lie--an attempt to get me to waste my time with a non-game just so my feeble brain can comprehend the enormity of a draw phase and a refresh phase and a status phase. The card text supersedes the rules?!?! What madness is this!

So now I just jump into the full game right away.

But Eric, the one who has gifted us Spirit Island, is not a mendacious cretin like many others who've tried to cow us before. When he tells us to start with low-complexity spirits, and to avoid the expansion for a good while, he's entirely right.

I don't care that you taught yourself Magic Realm from the 1st edition rulebook. Just do it. Go ahead and use the suggested power progression cards, too. It's a great way to go. You'll thank us later.
