I should have gone in to more detail, I'm sorry.
When the biggest game of the last year is the monster known as Gloomhaven, and the majority of the BGG top ten are on the heavy (both in weight and rules) side, I can't agree with your statement.
Sure, you don't have to, however:
I clearly stated Kickstarter games are an exception, as very often, the more bits and pieces there are in the project - along with the accompanying rules that lengthen the game epxerience so that customers dont feel cheated out of a sizeable amount of cash - the more money the publisher stands to make. Hence, there are very few 30 minute KS games in the top 1000. Yet you again chose to pick Gloomhaven as an example. I am not counting KS games, as they are often a poor representation of games produced by established publishers, such as FFG.
Additionaly, and more importantly, there are very few actual long games even in the top 20:
1. Through the Ages (2015)
2. Star Wars Rebellion (2016)
3. War of the Ring (2012)
4. Mage Knight (2011)
The last two are great games, which are six and seven years old respectively. War of the Ring is a second edition. I was talking about the current trend.
Also, the BGG ratings are skewed for various reasons. Ironically, the best example of this is Gloomhaven, which was voted as a 10 by a large amount of people who havent even played it. The designer even went as far as to suggest everyone on KS should go and give it just that ranking on BGG.
Anyway, only two reasonably new games are long. The actual suggested times arent always correct. Arkham Horror with a group of four players, even experienced ones, will rarely go under two hours unless the participants are rushing through it. It often goes to 4 hours+ with expansions and if everyone is invested in the theme.
That is a long game.
As for the rules of various games, i find that their complexity is usually overstated. But that's obviously just my experience.
Last but not least - BGG isnt a model of the whole games market. Most people dont actually come on here and vote or take part in discussions. Which is something FFG will surely take into consideration when creating a new edition of a game that has become a running joke in the eyes of many as needlessly obtuse and complicated for its own good.
