Thread: War of the Ring (Second Edition):: Variants:: Fall of Barad Dur - sudden death victory?

$

by Reinhard Sabel

Hallo,

I know, it will be VERY RARE, that such an Event happens in WoTR, but we Play, that the Fall of Barad Dur means a Victory for the "Good Player".

One could say, that Conquering Barad Dur is worth 4 VPs - for a militayr Victory.

Of course this means, that the Good Forces have conquered or passed by either Morannon or Mina Morgul (which is an accomplishment in itself.

The Variant Rule means, that if the Good Forces smashes through Minas Morgul or Morannon and reaches Gorgoroth, it is obliged to leave a Holding force in the conquered Fortress.

We liked the rule.

In the book 8and especially in the film) Saurom does not leave Barad Dur - so somehow he seems to be unable to do so - we guess.
So giving 4 VPs for Barad Dur seems not unlogical.

Any ideas?

OK, thanks for the confirmation. Do you find you mostly work right to left, or left to right? My Germans, as I said, so far had me working left to right mostly.

Can't say I have reflected on that. I keep the Unit Cards in a column next to the game map, in alphabetic order from the top down, so I just pick them in that order (while keeping one eye on the AR Track of course to see which ones are even eligible to take any actions in the current Turn).

Thanks Brian. I’m still on the fence, mainly due to cost, but I enjoyed the novel it’s based on, and the 40k universe generally. Perhaps when I get some unexpected money..

In majority of games that I have played, the player that triggered end game condition did not end up winning the game! That is especially noticeable when the players that follow do have 1 turn more in total. (If the starting player do not triggers the end game, he/she will have one extra powerful turn in comparison to the first player that earned 4 trophies.)

I found it odd, and overruled it, that the game is ended when all players have played the same number of turns and without the possibility to earn more then 1 trophy after the endgame triggers.

What is the experience of others regarding the endgame turn (and rule)?

How did you stretch them? I tried the hot water method, but that didn't widen them enough.

I’m really looking forward to getting my all in pledge (even though it’s dissapointing that there have now been confirmed delays). Though I’m happy to wait for a better quality product!

Considering the game had such a large number of backers I’m surprised that there aren’t more playthroughs on YouTube.

Any one know of any good ones?

Hello! Based on [geekurl=https://boardgamegeek.com/article/8559645#8559645]this[/geekurl] response in another thread, the Goblin Cavalry should take a point of damage, yet stay in the Swordsman ring. The wall should be removed.

the Wall takes 1 point of damage. If the
Monster still has points remaining, that
Monster stays in the Swordsman ring
until the next Move Monsters phase
, as
shown below.

•If two or more Monsters move from the
Swordsman ring to attack a Wall at the
same time, the Wall is removed and 1
Monster (players’ choice) takes 1 point
of damage. The others are unharmed.
All remaining Monsters stay in the
Swordsman ring until the next Move
Monsters phase.

On Watch It Played (Free Youtube Channel), Rodney Smith ran a scenario with his son Luke who I think was 8 at the time.

He clearly had 0 problems with the game and seemed to have a lot of fun doing it.

This video hooked me and my son on the game when it first came out. We both loved it and he was 9 at the time.

From the Mission Briefing: (in the Errata Rulebook)
You can buy only six types of weapons:
Carbines
Sub machineguns
Automatic Rifles
Pistols
Grenades
Bazookas

So yes, Grenades are allowed.

To sum up, I will play as follows:

-) Prepare objective deck -> objectives not included are put back into the box and never looked upon by anyone.

-) Successfully scored objectives and objectives discarded due to Rebel Cell, The Long War etc. go to a place where they are recoverable by Something To Fight For

This does increase the value of STFF for me :)

Cheers, Thanks and happy 2019!

Thread: Star Smuggler:: Rules:: Contact Tries, repeat Encounters and Encounter duration

Hey everybody. Just started playing this a couple of days ago and had some questions:

1. Do Contact Tries take time? Under R227, it says that you must have at least an hour left in the day but doesn't say how much time it takes. In R203, it also doesn't mention anything. Am I missing something?

2. If I see the same encounter multiple times, does it have an effect each time? For things like E013 Bandits, I would figure yes, but with Encounters such as E151 Respiratory Disease, do I get a new respiratory disease every time?

3. When I trigger an encounter and it says "takes rest of day," does that happen automatically or only if I decide to do the mission? For example, with E198 Disgruntled Colonists, does it take the whole day just to talk to them, or only if I agree to such a mission? Is it on a case-by-case basis?

Let me know if I need to clarify any of my questions. Thank you in advance for your help!

First and foremost....
WE GOT A COMBINED BGG ENTRY:
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/268201/dice-throne

I'll be moving this FAQ over to there shortly. I am leaving this thread up but will be moving all activity to a new thread in that listing.

On to my last update...

Okay I took a big pass for the season 2 rules (finally got my game this past weekend!). Updated a bunch of sections. If anyone sees any conflicts, then let me know.

Also hopefully the Dice Throne/Roxley guys can take a pass through this. I know the rules guru really doesn't like BGG but it would be so helpful if someone could do a quick pass through this whole thing. It's nice having it all in one spot/post that theoretically is up to date. As rulings change from time to time it can be tough without something like this as you can get conflicting answers.

A couple things in particular based on my pass today:

1) Question 5 for Barbarian was a new ruling/change. Do you notice or know of any others I need to update for? For example the question right above it has similar THEN wording... is this one also wrong now or was Demising shot just a typo?

Monk question 11 is similar with the THEN wording.

2) This thread is a very important one... I took my best stab at it here (for example question K10 of the FAQ) but still feeling it's a little vague as to whether or not the priority always reset to the active player or not. Feels like it should be wanted it confirmed. Here is a link to the latest post I think sums up the concern.

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/30763382#30763382

3) There was a thread (cant find it for some reason) where it was asked if evasive evades the entire attack (and status effects) or just the damage. Thematically it makes sense to avoid it all (and is how I had been playing it) but the ability only says damage (and comparisons were made to defensive rolls per question D8 in the FAQ and other status tokens like enter the shadows)

5) Question 8 in the Paladin section seems wrong now. I left it alone for now... but it seems like the active player will always get priority first and it would be viewed as simultaneously wanting to do the same thing... would you agree?

I'm currently making a custom insert, so I can store everything in the base game box and the exploration expansion box. This involves modding the plastic inserts for the models, so this is a new challenge for me, but I think I can make the bosses and the exploration monsters fit together.
The 4 extra heroes are gonna go in the main game box, with all the cards (sleeved) and tiles/tokens. I'll see if I can make foamcore trays for all the cards and tokens.

That's tactics indeed, I can justify it as simply going out of visibility range IRL. Metagaming is when you know what the paragraphs do for a specific soldier and adjust accordingly, or when you replay a mission with the hexes to avoid fresh in your mind.

I dislike metagaming, as shown above, it is totally destroying the immersion and experience of the game, imo.

Ambush! is almost like playing an RPG to me. I spent 5' yesterday deliberating if I should take the 40% chance of killing a tank, and letting a comrade almost certainly die, or give him a command to hide instead. I chose the latter, because that's how I would likely act in that case.

Tactics rule. Agree.
